About Credit Unions

History

Pioneering the credit union movement is a legacy of milestones that have fostered the industry’s growth and success. Listed below is a snapshot of the historic timeline that showcases some of the credit union industry achievements over the years.


Historic Timeline

1846: Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen established peoples banks in Germany.
1908: St. Mary's Bank (La Caisse Populaire de Sainte Marie) opened in Manchester, New Hampshire - the first U.S. credit union.  It received a charter on April 6, 1909.
1921: Credit Union National Extension Bureau formed with Roy F. Bergengren as director. 
Funded by Filene.  Objectives:  Get the laws, organize credit unions, form state leagues,
and create a national association.
1934: - On June 26 the Federal Credit Union Act signed into law by President Franklin D. 
   Roosevelt.

- Colorado Credit Union League formed (now known as the Credit Union Association of
  Colorado
1935: CUNA Mutual Insurance Society was created.
1948: CUNA Board of Directors voted the third Thursday of October as Credit Union Day –
celebrated continuously since that time.
1970: World Council of Credit Unions formed.
1974: U.S. Central Credit Union established.
1978: Colorado Corporate Federal Credit Union (now SunCorp) was formed.
